History of Spectrum School of Ministry

Calvary Bible Institute was begun in the fall of 1997 with its founder and President being Rev. William Strayer. Its location was, and presently is, on the campus of Calvary Chapel Worship Center, New Port Richey.

At that time it offered a one year Biblical Studies degree, a missionary training program that, once completed, earned a Discipleship Training School certificate.  Also, the school offered a two year Associates degree in Biblical Studies and a Paul-Timothy program that, once completed, earned an Associates of Ministerial Studies degree.

Some of the courses that were offered at that time included Acts and Missions I, Dispensations, Evangelism, Apologetics, General Epistles, Growing In Grace, Marriage and Family I, Ministry Development, Old Testament Survey, Romans.  In the second semester of the school year 1997/1998 it offered Acts and Missions II, Christ In the Gospels, Faith In Action, Marriage and Family II, New Testament Survey & Bible Customs, Power for Living, Spiritual Authority, Holy Spirit, Signs and Wonders, World Missions.

In the fall of 1999 the name of the school was changed to Tampa Bay School of Ministry and Christian Arts and added courses that would enable the student to receive a Graduate of Contemporary Music, Bachelor of Music in Contemporary Music, as well as a one year diploma of Theology, Associate of Theology, Graduate of Theology, Bachelor of Theology.

In the spring of 2002 the name of the school was again changed to Spectrum School of Ministry and the program it offered was changed considerably.  We now offer a one year diploma in Biblical Studies, a two year Associates degree in Theology and a Bachelors degree in Theology.  The courses were changed considerably for the spring semester of 2002 as well so that the flow of the two year rotation was interrupted and a different sequence of study was begun at that time.  This posed a problem for many of the students, some of which were poised to graduate that semester.  Some of the students chose to continue their studies elsewhere while others stayed but were confused as to where the drastic change left them.

In January of 2002 Pastor Avis Stegemann  became Administrator of Tampa Bay School of Ministry and Christian Arts ( the name of the school had not

yet changed).  Pastor Robert Stegemann became Dean in March of 2002 and this is when the name of the school changed to Spectrum School of Ministry.

Much of the following months were spent in stabilizing the school, assuring the students and working with them to plan for their continued studies and making solid plans for the future of the school.  We were able to accomplish this by spending much one on one time with the students, listening to them, and working out details so that they felt comfortable continuing their studies.

As a result, the administration had the opportunity to get to know the students personally and a rapport was developed with them that lasts to the present time.  Opportunities to pray with and encourage the students arise weekly and relationships built on trust have been developed.  This has enabled the process of mentoring to begin in several students planning to enter the ministry full time.  The teachers as well have developed good teacher/student relationships and are passionate about their ministry of teaching, spending many hours in preparation so that the classroom experience will be hold the student’s interest.

The 2002 graduating class consisted of six one year  degree graduates, three Associates degree graduates and nine Bachelor degree graduates.  Twelve of these graduates are now serving full time in the ministry. Some are

missionaries, some serve on staff here at Calvary Chapel Worship Center and other churches, two are pioneering a church in Dunedin, and five are continuing their studies at Spectrum School of Ministry.
